You’ve been hearing buzz about “copywriting” but you have no clue what they’re talking about.
What is copywriting?
Do you need it?
Is it copyright, copy write OR copywriting?
It’s all so confusing and truth be told, a few years ago, I was confused too.
So, I’m going to break it all down for you. And honestly, it’s all very simple, so take a seat, sit back and relax.
This is going to easy.
What is copy? Simply put, it’s the words you write in business!
What is copywriting? Copywriting is the art of writing WORDS THAT SELL.
Copywriting is an art and a profession.
A copywriter is a person that writes copy.
Copywriting is ONE WORD, not two. To read COPY WRITING drives me insane.
The copywriting profession started a long, long time ago and it has been used in ever commercial, billboard, news headline, advertisement, and banner ad (hello early 90s) you’ve ever seen since birth.
That’s right… copy is the words you use to sell anything (seriously anything).
In today’s marketing world, every time you read an email, Facebook Ad, IG post, blog post, landing page, sales page — you name it — you’re consuming the art of copywriting.
Some of it’s good, a very small percentage is great, and most of what you read is complete crap.
More specifically, copywriting is how you get people to take action. It’s selling through the written word.
You can also sell in with video content but most likely a copywriter wrote the script.
So, it’s all selling.
To buy those shoes.
To click that button.
To comment on that post.
To read your article.
To pull out their credit cards and say, “YES, I want that!”
Copywriters are expensive because they make customers “BUY NOW!”
Copywriting is NOT a Copyright.
We are not lawyers that protect your content from being used by someone else. If you need legal help, do not hire a copywriter (you’ll lose).
Without copywriting, sales will fall flat and you won’t have a business.
Now, when it comes to writing copy in your business, you have 2 options.
Write it yourself.
Hire it out.
There are pros and cons to both.
If you write it yourself, you’ll save thousands of dollars (pro), but you could be staring at a blank screen or procrastinating for days, months or years (con).
True story.
But if you hire it out, it may not sound like you (con), it will likely cost thousands (con), but it will be done quickly (pro) and probably make you a bunch of money (pro).
Also a true story.
So what is a young, probably solo entrepreneur such as yourself to do?
If you’re new to online marketing or if your business is new. I highly recommend you learn to write your own copy.
I’ve seen too many business owners hire out copy well before they were financially ready. It’s tough to justify the expense of a copywriter before you’re making consistent money.
Which feels like a catch 22 because if you suck at writing — you need to hire it out.
But you can’t hire it out because you don’t have any money.
So it boils down to this… Write your own copy if you’re just starting out!
One of 2 things will happen.
You’ll fall in love with copywriting because it makes you money (that’s what happen to me).
You’ll hate it and hire it out.
Either way, start writing your own copy because well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
And let’s be honest, copywriting is a life skill that never goes out of style.
Making money never gets old.
Ok, so does that sum it up?
Do you know what copywriting is and why you need it?
Perfect.
Now, it’s your turn. In the comments, tell me
